The steps up the Duomo's crazy, isn't it? I remember feeling really claustrophobic on the way up, but at least it's worth it in the end. And coming back down again seems a lot easier. Did you guys climb all the way up St Peter's Basilica in Rome too? Glad you guys enjoyed Italy so much (like I said, living vicariously through you guys) :D
